A little while ago, I touted the idea of updating the music for ballroom dance venues. Tom and I chose the name Legacy for our dance club to promote the idea of ballroom dance extending to the next generation. So, one might think that I would be wiling to embrace other new trends in the ballroom community. NOT SO!
There is one new generation trend that I find to be less acceptable. That is, as the title suggests, texting while dancing. The traditions of ballroom call for a refined, social atmosphere around the dance floor. One, where the genteel have polite conversation and develop friendships. Though I understand that those younger than myself can multi-task better than me, I still tire of seeing the tops of their heads as they engage in phone activity. Look up – and notice the lady who has sat idle far too long and needs a dance partner. Look up – and notice the beginner dancer that could use a little practice with their rumba. Look up – and find out something about the dancer sitting across the table. Look up – and watch and learn from the dancers who are more advanced. Engage in conversation and connect with the who, what, where, and when of dancing.
While watching the cell phone activity at a recent event, I took a minute to get some video and then created my own Public Service Announcement. Enjoy the video below by clicking the link. Thanks to Becky for hamming it up for me in order to help me make my point.
