Have you ever watched a baby take their very first steps? It is an exiting event for the adults but, if you watch the baby, they are absolutely intent on each step. Each time a foot moves, it is an individual conquest. Their little feet have to wait on the process as the brain and muscles connect and produce that one precious step. Now, fast forward to that child a few years later and watch them run after a ball in the back yard. There are no more labored steps, there is no longer a thought process. The art of walking is now in what is called muscle memory.
The same is true for ballroom. For those who say they have “2 left feet” I can assure you that the patterns of the dances will soon become second nature after a short time of repetition. You will find that right foot because it so easily follows the left in all patterns. You will soon be able to maintain your dance patterns while concentrating on your next move.
If you are a man, you will find that left foot, with which you are so familiar, has a very important purpose in the man’s part. It is your lead foot in most moves. That first left step tells the lady what the dance will be, the tempo of the dance, and other important information. Never minimize the left foot!
So, just as you conquered those first steps as a child, ballroom can help you master dance patterns that will bring you countless hours of entertainment.
