Tails, I Win!

I stood off to the side in the tuxedo store, realizing my role was, primarily, moral support. As the clerk totaled up the numbers and pronounced the final cost for the rental of tails for one night, Tom’s eyes widened and shifted towards me. As I read the question in his eyes, I chuckled and gave him the confirmation nod. “You started this,” I said, referencing his mandate as President of  Let’s Dance Club that the 25th Anniversary Dance should be absolutely formal. The irony of the situation took me back to a time in our engagement which now makes us laugh but was very unpleasant at the time.

My wedding. MY wedding, right? You know how these things go – the merging of two families, the trying-to-make-everyone-happy-insanity, the “Why didn’t we just elope?” question. In spite of all of this, I knew my wedding would be beautiful. Coming from a middle class family, simple elegance was something I believed in. Beautiful summer dresses for the bridesmaids and light grey tuxedos for the groomsmen would create just the right setting for my special day.

Did I mention the “merging of two families?” Turns out that the groom had absolutely no interest in tuxedos. He didn’t understand why almost matching suits wouldn’t work just as well. He didn’t understand why any of these things mattered to me.  He then refused the whole idea and the conversation crescendoed into him calling my chosen attire for the men MONKEY SUITS! Needless to say, what followed was not pretty.

Tempers calmed, common sense (aka, my way) prevailed, and we had handsome men in tuxedoes in our wedding.

So now, I look at this evolution of my husband: President and Master of Ceremonies for a ballroom dance club, a life of tuxedoes and formals, dressed in tails for Saturday night’s dance, and always looking distinguished for every occasion. 37 years ago, I could not have imagined this life-style. I love the irony of this transformation and I am happy to say, Tails, I Win!

See you on the Floor!

Legacy Cafe this Sunday!

35.gif~c100This Sunday is the first Sunday of the month which means Legacy Cafe. More fabulous music with coffee and biscotti will give us an end to the weekend dance. Early hours for the back to work people, 7 to 9.

$10 per person.

Can’t wait to see you on the Legacy floor!

reproduction-vintage-dressesDavid’s Bridal at the Avenue has a great deal on some formal dresses! Many are summer but a few are a darker color or black which can be worn into fall. I needed a summer formal and found a beautiful one at less that 20% of the sticker price. Anyone going to the DanceQuest End of Summer Formal should check it out.

Kibble’s Class Tonight – Single Swing and Waltz

swing_dance_undercon_cartoo.jpg~c100From Greased Lightnin’ to Footloose,  some of the best  party songs are single step swing dances. This high energy swing is danced in many of your throw-back songs and always brings excitement to the dance floor. Join me tonight at 7 at DanceQuest and I’ll teach you the basics of the swing along with some nice, graceful moves of the waltz.

Legacy Cafe at DanceQuest! First Sunday at 7!

35.gif~c100The FIRST SUNDAY at 7. That is the mantra for the new Legacy Cafe starting August 3rd. We will be hosting a new Legacy on the first Sunday of each months from 7 to 9 pm. It will be the same energetic music as before but with a new location and and a new time slot. With so many dance studios offering options on Friday and Saturday nights, Tom and I decided to try a Sunday night, Back to Work, kind of venue. It starts early, at 7 pm, and goes until 9 pm, so that we can get in one last bit of dancing before the weekend’s end and still get home in time to get ready for Monday.

These venues will be a relaxed, cafe-style atmosphere. Soft drinks and coffee will be served along with light snacks. The Legacy Cafe will be all about the music and dance and less about food as was done with the previous Legacy dances.

Many of you know that Tom and I love the search for great songs from all types of music. We are anxious to share those songs as we begin this new chapter of Legacy.
